Weekly Round-up

Wow! What an amazing collection of food for the Food Bank. A huge ‘Thank you’ for your Harvest donations, these will be much appreciated.

We hope that you enjoy our short Harvest film-the link will be emailed to you so keep a look out in your inboxes.

Having completed our ‘The Way Back Home’ writing, this week the children looked at a different image and did an independent piece of writing, using the skills learnt and thinking about how these are applied independently.

In Maths the Year 2 children have continued to look at fact families within 20 using part-whole models and bar models. The Year 1 children have been looking at addition within 10 using part-whole models, bar models and some children have also been able to identify the ‘commutative’ number sentence.

During the school break could you please work on number formation with the children-ensuring that the digits of 2-digit numbers are in the correct place, have the correct orientation and are formed correctly-see the video at the bottom of this post.

Here are a couple of Maths links that are great for testing/reinforcing number bonds (to 10 for Y1; 10/20 for Y2) times tables for Y2 (2, 10, 5); number ordering and addition.

After a term of looking at collage, working in the style of an artist and experimenting with surrealism, the children produced their final piece of artwork. The children all worked incredibly hard to follow the brief of a space themed collage that needed to include themselves and some ‘painted’ paper that had been created by the children. The children will be bringing those home today. Encourage them to talk to you about what they have done and ask them if they can tell you the name of the artist/illustrator that we looked at (Eric Carle). Can they explain ‘surrealism’ to you?

As part of our Science work we have continued to look at the seasons, thinking about the weather and what is associated with the seasons. Talk to your child about the month in which they were born and the season this is in to reinforce this concept.

Parenting Smart (Place2Be)

The children’s mental health charity, Place2Be, has launched a new website aimed at helping parents with typical situations they can find themselves in with their children.

Advice can be found on over forty topics including:

Understanding sibling rivalry

My child is lying, what does it mean, what should I do?

My child has trouble going to sleep

My child says ‘I hate you!’

Supporting healthy gaming habits

The Parenting Smart website can found here

It is a great website which you may wish to take a look at.

Weekly round-up

This week…

The children have been busy publishing their ‘The way Back Home’ writing. They had to think carefully about copying their edited drafts using their best handwriting. The children were very focused and tried hard. You will be able to see a copy of this work when they bring it home next week.

In Maths the Year 2 children been looking at fact families within 20 using part-whole models and bar models. The Year 1 children have been looking at addition within 10 using part-whole models.

For art this week the children thought about what they had learnt during this term about collage and designed their final ‘space’ themed collage which will include a picture of themselves to give it a ‘surreal’ element. They had fun thinking about their poses and we are looking forward to seeing these when they are completed.

Also, this week the children have been thinking about Harvest. They have learnt a Harvest poem and created mixed media Harvest art, which will form the basis of their Harvest video-this will be emailed to you all next Friday.

Weekly Round-up

This week…

The children have continued drafting their ‘The Way Back Home’ writing and started editing. They looked at their ‘success criteria’ they generated at the beginning of the writing process and then checked their writing for evidence of this. Next week they will begin ‘publishing’ their work. We are very proud of the discussions the children have taken part in and with their writing.

In Maths the Year 2 children have been looking at comparing numbers using the language ‘greater then’, ‘less than’, ‘equal to’ and using the associated symbols > < =. They have been using this to help them reason when problem solving. The Year 1 children have been looking at ordering and comparing numbers, including ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd…).

Art took on a ‘surreal’ feel this week as the children looked at surreal space art created using collage. They watched a video clip from the Tate Kids website which explained what surreal art is. Click HERE to go to the website.

A huge ‘WELL DONE!’ to all of the children who participated in the cross-country yesterday-they should be very proud of their efforts…and medals. It was great to see such enthusiasm and determination.

BUG CLUB

We dipped last week with Bug Club-Class 4 were top of the leader board in KS1. Let’s see what we can do this week Class 2. When the children go on Bug Club this can be written in their reading diary and will count towards their weekly reading for the reading raffle. The children who have been pulled out of the reading raffle so far have really enjoyed choosing their book from the vending machine.

It would be great if your child could access Bug Club at least a couple of times a week, not only does it help your child with their reading but also the comprehension of what they are reading.

Weekly round-up

This week…

The children have focused on their sentence structure, drafting sentences for their ‘The Way Back Home’ writing. They have thought about making good word choices and using a variety of adjectives.

In Maths the Year 1 children have been looking at comparing numbers using the language ‘greater then’, ‘less than’, ‘equal to’ and using the associated symbols > < =. The Year 2s have been continuing to look at partitioning numbers with a focus on tens and ones. It is important that children are able to understand the value that each digit represents in a number.

Having created their own painted paper last week in art, inspired by Eric Carle, the children used this to create their own collages in their sketch books. They worked really hard and some even created their own backgrounds using coloured pencils.

The children have continued to develop their map skills in Geography, learning the compass directions and associated vocabulary.

BUG CLUB

Well done Class 2! More children accessed Bug Club last week, read books and completed activities to demonstrate their understanding of the texts read. Great work!

It would be great if your child could access Bug Club at least a couple of times a week, not only does it help your child with their reading but also the comprehension of what they are reading.

READING RAFFLE

Every week we hold a reading raffle in school. To enter this the children will need to read at least three times a week and then their names will be put into the raffle; they will also move along the class bookworm. Please remember that the children can read books from home, the library as well as their school books and Bug Club-these all count towards weekly reading. If your child’s name is pulled out they will receive a golden coin that can be used in our new Reading Raffle vending machine. Please remember to record when you hear your child read in their reading diaries. We will take these in on a Friday morning

Weekly round-up

This week…

The children created story maps for ‘The Way Back Home’ and have been looking at different word classes-nouns and adjectives. They have looked at how using adjectives can add more detail and interest to our writing.

In Maths the children are continuing to revisit place value concepts and using their knowledge to ‘reason’. The Year 2s are also focusing on the 2 times table, not just counting in 2s! They are trying to build speed and accuracy with these.

In art this week the children looked at the wonderful author and illustrator Eric Carle. He used collage to create his illustrations by painting tissue paper and then using this to create his beautiful work. The children painted paper in preparation for experimenting with collage next week. Some great colours and textures have been created.

In Geography the children have been looking at the local area which has involved identifying different types of homes and map skills.

Here are a few pictures from this week:

The ‘Max’ Card

The Max Card is the UK’s leading discount card for foster families and families of children with additional needs. Families can use their Max Card at venues across the UK to get free or discounted admission.

The scheme is designed to help families save money on great days out at castles, zoos, bowling alleys, trampoline parks and many more.

They aim to provide a sense of community through stimulating learning experiences and enjoyable days out for everyone.

They work with Local Authorities and selected charities, who administer the cards to eligible families in their areas.

Weekly Round-up

Hello and welcome to our first Class 2 blog post!

It has been an exciting start to the year so far, getting to know each other, learn new routines and not to mention the excitement of an alien landing!

On Monday 6th September, whilst sat getting ready for the day we heard a strange noise followed by a loud ‘crash’ sound. We looked out of the classroom window to find …

Scattered on the ground were boxes containing an important message and special ‘alien detective’ glasses! After following the clues we found…Zargoe, our very own alien! We are feeding Zargoe daily with alien words as well as teaching him about Maths, English and everything else that we do!

What an exciting way to start the new school year!

This week…

As part of our ‘Out of this world’ topic we are using ‘The Way Back Home,’ by Oliver Jeffers, as our stimulus text for English. We have looked at story sequencing and sentence structure, which we will continue with this term.

In Maths the children are revisiting place value concepts, which has involved sorting, counting and partitioning of numbers.

We have started looking at ‘Collage’ in art and this week we created pages in our sketchbooks to show what different materials we could use. We also talked about the different textures that could be created.

Here are a few pictures from this week:
